The 4 pieces you need when traveling in Spring

Spring may be my favorite time of year to travel. The temperature is warming up, all the flowers and plants are blooming and bringing color back into the world, and the crowds haven’t quite reached their summer time packed craziness. That being said, traveling in spring can also be the most unpredictable season as temperatures can suddenly swing and that perfect sunny weekend you planned for can end up with those “April Showers” we know so well. These things don’t deter me from traveling but they do influence a few of the things I pack.

Here are the 4 pieces you need when traveling in Spring

Raincoat/waterproof coat

A lot of raincoats these days can actually double as a normal coat without looking like your dressed for a downpour. I don’t ever want to be caught in a situation where my clothes are soaked or I am forced to wear a garbage bag over my clothes. My Steve Madden coat is a classic cut and color and can easily roll up into the bottom of my bag just in case I need it.

Cardigan

The temperature can go from mild to cold in a quick spring second and the difference between sunshine and shade can make me shiver so packing a light cardigan is never going to be a bad idea. They are great because you can still see your cute top underneath (no more hiding cute outfits under layers of winter coats) and they are small and light enough to roll into your purse if you really don’t need them. Cardigans take up almost no space in your bag and they never go out of style so this is a piece you won’t regret purchasing or packing

Reliable walking shoes

Whenever you are traveling I recommend good walking shoes but spring requires a bit more versatility because you want shoes that are a bit waterproof (see above about April showers) but are also breathable and comfortable for long distances walking and exploring. If you insist on packing those adorable ballet flats, pack an alternate for them as well like some cute Adidas.

Large Purse (or backpack)

If you’re going to be carrying around extra pieces like coats or cardigans, you need a little extra space to keep them. My bag typically has 1-2 bottles of water in it as well, especially as the temps start to warm up so I need the extra space to fit everything else in with my camera. There are some really great (& cute) backpacks that are fashionable & practical with tricks to deter pickpockets.

These 4 pieces are building blocks for almost every outfit you can pack. You can incorporate them with jeans, shorts, dresses or skirts so if you lay these pieces out first, you can pack for the rest of your trip to minimize weight. If I know the shoes I am wearing with my first look, I can cater the planning of more of my looks to fit with those as well – same thing with coats –  I try to pack my clothes in the same color scheme so the same coat will flow with them and I won’t need to pack an extra one.
