Tips for wearing a Culotte Romper

Culottes have been a style I have been wary of for a while. When you’re shorter like me, you have to watch your cuts of clothing to make sure they don’t make you look wider or shorter than you are.

In case you were wondering what culottes are, they are basically long, wide-cut shorts that almost look like a skirt or dress from afar (when you’re not walking).

Jumpsuits & rompers on the other hand, have been something I can’t get enough of (like here, here, here and here), so when I saw this jersey romper with culottes bottoms, I decided it was time to give it a try. It is a comfortable and casual outfit that would be great for Sunday brunch or a day on the town. I love the jersey material in particular because it is so stretchy and flowy, which makes it extra comfortable (which is so key with clothing).

If you have been checking out culottes but have been unsure as well, use these tips for dipping your toe into the water

Length
Make sure the length hits you either upper-calf or ankle length. Too short and it makes it look like you’re wearing long shorts or mens shorts and the lower-calf is a strange angle that makes you look shorter, same thing with too close to your knee.

Shoes
Wear heels. If you are taller than 5’6 you can probably wear flats and look cute but you won’t look as cute as if you’re wearing heels. Because of that awkward length, a heel is going to elongate your legs and just make the look feel more put together.

Color
Stick to solids. You may see one in a super cute print but when you are already dealing with a tricky cut, why risk a tricky print too? Honestly it is just going to make you look wider 9 time out of 10 so just don’t risk it.

Material
Go with soft, flowy materials that are more forgiving and also look more like a skirt when you’re standing, since that was the original intent. Something about the crepe, denim, and thicker polyester materials just feel too stiff and sit differently on your lower half than a jersey, satin, lace, silk.
