We have done A LOT in our years here in Vegas but there are a few more things we want to check off our list before we go. Heading to The Lion Habitat Ranch…or The Cat House has been on that list for a couple years so when we finally had a free weekend, we decided it was time to see some kitties.
Behind us is Bora, the grandson lion of the lion you hear roar in the opening of all the MGM movies and also a breed of lion extinct in the wild. The Cat House houses the lions previously of the MGM Lion Habitat as well as the lions from the Las Vegas Zoo after it closed. Keith, the owner, lives on the property and works with and hand-feeds all of the lions with a small staff.
They also have some other animals that they took in from the zoo like the ostriches and a giraffe named Ozzy. For $10 you can feed Ozzy and pet him a little. It’s pretty cute. You can also pay $50 to feed the lions but it is through a plexiglass tube so we didn’t think it was worth it.
As you walk around the habitat they have 45 different lions but really all they do is sleep. Apparently Lions regularly sleep up to 20 hours a day! They are no longer breeding lions there, they just had the newest male cub fixed.
They do the cub feedings every day at 1pm, they are 1 year old so they don’t look very small anymore! The handlers all hand feed the cubs which is pretty cool.
It was pretty cool being so close to these magnificent animals! If you are looking for something “non-Vegas” to do in Vegas, this is definitely a place to visit!
