Ann Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. She believed that mothers were “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”. Although she was successful in establishing Mother’s Day, she ultimately became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday as Hallmark and other companies had started selling Mother’s Day cards. In fact, she started to organize protests against the day that she worked so hard to establish! Regardless, a day set aside to thank Mother’s is established in most countries around the world.
I’m not sure what Ann wanted us to do for this holiday but I see nothing wrong in thanking mothers with fun, pampering gifts, just make sure you tell them what they mean to you too!
