One of the best ways to add interest to a top is through the sleeves. The 80s may have scared us off from volume on top for the last couple decades but we are easing our way back, in a much better way. Ruffles and bell sleeves are among the several styles making their way onto the streets and stores right now and I couldn’t help but snag this one on our recent trip when I forgot my suitcase. The shirt I chose combines 3 of the main ways to feature a statement sleeve but you can break it down into just one of these three easily. Here are a few of my favorites right now:
Statement Sleeves
Bell Sleeve
The bell sleeves call back the memories of the 70’s (or at least the photo memories) and can range from the long and moderately impractical (but still so fun) to the shorter and more architectural bell. Bell sleeves can start at the elbow or the wrist, and either one adds interest to a shirt without needing the addition of other NSFW trends (like crop tops or lace-ups, although I love those too!) making them a perfect option to take from work to the bar.
Balloon/Flounce Sleeve
These large flowing sleeves make you feel like you’re dressed for the renaissance, albeit with better plumbing. Pairing a large flowing sleeve with an off-shoulder style can make this feel even more romantic and a little sexy.
Ruffled Sleeve
Ruffles are such a fun detail that you want them to stand on their own. Try to avoid busy patterns that mask the ruffle and opt for solids or stripes to let them shine. Ruffles can add to a top in many locations such as the collar, cleavage, bottom, sleeve, or even along the buttons! This detail has the most possibility and can be done in the smallest to largest amount you prefer.
The best way to rock one of these looks is to keep the bottom half simple. If you want to add a bit more flare to these pieces consider a detailed shoe or fun choker! If the weather is going to be colder, take an extra minute to consider your outerwear before you head out as these sleeves can be bulky or difficult under layers so you’ll want to bring a coat with a bit of extra room or consider a thin layer underneath your fabulous sleeves!
Which of those style sleeves are your favorite? Here are some more options you may love.
