Hochheimer Weinfest

Wine festival season is here in Germany which means every weekend different villages will be having their own wine festivals and since we are in the heart of wine country, I see a few of these in my future. For our first one, we headed to Hoccheimer Weinfest. You can head to this village any time and stop by some of the wineries or local restaurants to try this local wine but for Weinfest there are non stop venues where you can get a glass of wine for 2 euro.

In 1845, Queen Victoria of England travelled along the Rhine-valley with her german husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He loved Hochheim’s wine and introduced her to what she used to call “Hock“ – white wine from Hochheim.  This was apparently birth of the saying: “Good Hock keeps off the doc”. (I’ll let you know if I ever hear anyone say that…other than me from now on).

We got our wine glasses and “wine-glass-holder-necklaces” (until I come up with a shorter name…) for 2 euro each and headed on our way. They set up vendors all along the streets in the main city center with everything from clothes, flavored oils and vinegars, candy, food, and, of course, wine!

It was the hottest day since we have been here so I was thankful for my favorite summer shorts and off-shoulder top! I wore my new flats too because these cobblestone roads are not made for heels and with all the walking we do I need some support for my toes!

Tschüss!
