We went into our Malta trip with nothing planned and not much on our mind. We were just looking for sunshine and relaxation. That can be a wonderful feeling but there are a couple drawbacks. When you aren’t really sure what you are going to be doing, you aren’t always sure what you need to pack. We packed bathing suits and cool, comfortable clothing for the days and light but dressier options for nights. In all, we did well, but we ended up picking a few things along the way for convenience. So learn from our “mistakes” and be sure to remember these 4 things you’ll want to pack for Malta!
1. Snorkel or Scuba License
Between the Blue Grotto, Blue Lagoon, Azure Window, and the 100s of spots in between, there are never ending places for you to take a look at the undersea world. The water in Malta is so clear and blue that you really are missing out if you don’t take a peak below. I don’t have my scuba license or we would have 100% booked a dive. Instead we snagged $20 snorkel sets at a local shop that worked great for the weekend. If you want to save yourself a couple bucks, be sure to pack these because you will want to use them every chance you get!
2. Beach Bag
Another seemingly obvious item that we overlooked. When you are only packing in a carry-on, you try to pack as little as possible but when you’re heading out on the water, you can’t really bring your rolling carry-on with you and most times you want to keep your valuables locked in the car. We ended up buying a $15 Malta beach bag to use for the weekend. It will end up doubling as a souvenir so I’m not too upset but the reality is we have 2-3 beach bags at home that we could have easily packed instead.
3. Underwater Camera
Are you catching the “beach accessories” theme? This was another thing that didn’t come to mind until we were snorkeling in a sea of fish and I thought “hmm, this water is so clear and stunning I would love to take this photo right now.” I’m not sure we saw many stores selling them, but I would have loved to have had an underwater go-pro with us or even a cheap under-water camera. It would have been worth it to me, even for only a couple snaps.
4. Water Shoes
While not as essential here as perhaps the beaches in the South of France, the beaches of Malta are not exactly “soft sand” and when we went snorkeling near the Blue Grotto, we were walking on rock and old corral. My toes would have been happier and I would have felt more secure in water shoes like a lot of the other tourists were wearing. It’s a hard one for me to remember or want to buy since they get little use over a year and I never think of them since I grew up in Florida with the softest beaches, but it would be a good thing to pack for Malta if you have the space.
Considering Malta is an island (or series of islands), you would think these things would be obvious but when you’re packing the day before you leave, you tend to let the less standard items slip. Since it’s only 4 things, hopefully you’ll keep this post in mind and save yourself a little extra $$ to spend on wine instead!
