What to see in the city of The Sound of Music

salzburg-13

Salzburg is a storybook city full of romance. The birthplace of both Mozart and The Sound of Music, you can have a full day walking around the city taking in the sights but I would recommend 3 main spots as must-sees.

What to See in Salzburg

1. Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg)

You can take a quick cog railway to the top of this fortress and the views alone make it worth it. There are some fun museums in the fortress as well with a little bit of history behind it as well as a creepy marionette museum. You can see this fortress in the background of many Sound of Music scenes!

2. Hellbrunn Castle (Schloss Hellbrun)

The landscape here is beautiful and home to the pavilion from The Sound of Music. They also have fun trick fountains that they have kept working for all of these years. Check out the audio guided tour, those are almost always worth the money.

3. Mirabell Palace and Gardens

This location is mostly worthwhile in spring and summer when everything is alive and in bloom. The song “Do Re Mi” from Sound of Music was filmed in these gardens too, making a visit here fun for Sound of Music fans.

I certainly recommend watching the move The Sound of Music after a visit to this city. I had not seen the movie in a couple years and we had so much fun recognizing all of the places we had visited throughout the day!
