Prague – The City of a Hundred Spires

prague

Prague has made it near the top of my list of favorite cities. This place is so beautiful and the city is small enough that you can walk everywhere but big enough that there is always something new to see. prague

Church of Our Lady   is located in the very centre of the Old Square. The two spires on the church are not symmetrical – meant to represent femininity and masculinity. I’m not sure I like that but hey, I wasn’t a Gothic architect! I I loved the light of this chandelier. It caught my eye from the outside so I had to go in to see it.

The Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square was built in 1410, making it the third oldest in the world! Every hour when it chimes, the little statues around it will move and the skeleton rings a bell! Fun fact – On its 605th anniversary, 9 October 2015, the clock appeared on the Google home page as a Google Doodle!

One of the most interesting things I found about Prague was its long Jewish history! We bought tickets to tour the Josefov or Jewish Quarter. The Jewish Quarter has 6 synagogues, including the Spanish Synagogue, the most stunning of the 6,  and the Old Jewish Cemetery, the most remarkable of its kind in Europe.

The Christmas Market is in the Old Town Square which has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1992. We were able to catch it on its first day of the season. praguepraguepragueprague
