My first DIY Bayalage

When it comes to my hair and hair-stylists, I am as close to a monogamist as you can be. I had one hair-stylist through high school (other than my dad coloring my hair on occasion), one hair-stylist through college (other than my dad coloring my hair on occasion), and one through my 4+ years in Vegas. I have even gone so far as going back to my stylist from College during my year of training before Vegas and going to my Vegas stylist on a weekend from a work trip back in the states after living in Germany for almost a year.

Since living in Germany I have heard more horror stories than not about hair gone wrong so I have been too scared to risk a cut or color here. Instead, I decided to try myself!

My stylist from Vegas was kind enough to send me the color that she uses on me but the last time I did the color it didn’t feel bright enough for me which is when I realized that I needed to lighten it first to do a more true baylage.

So I bought a Loreal highlighting/frost kit, watched a few DIY videos on YouTube and decided to give it a try! Keep reading for the steps I took and you can too!

OMG how HORRIBLE due those highlights look on that box kit???

The main three methods I observed were

Instead of just using one of the YouTube methods, I decided to combine all three, so, I parted my hair in half, then in several diagonals on each side and put them all in pony tails.
I took each portion one at a time, teased the hair up and then “painted” the hair (using a toothbrush) in a “V” shape, with long strands on either side and more concentrated on the bottom center of each section. I only “painted” the front side of the hair, not the underneath either. I don’t know if that changed anything but thats what I did.

While we’re here, yay for makeup free selfies!

I don’t have a great mirror to see the back so I guess I missed some pieces

Since this was my first time, I was NOT heavy handed on the lightening

By the time I finished lightening the last section, the rest had lightened enough so I only let it sit for another 10 minutes.  Then I rinsed my hair and washed it with the shampoo provided in the lightening kit. For the next part, you could either use the toner in the box, or if you have an awesome hair stylist who sends you the right color, mix that as appropriate! I used 2 oz of the Redken processing solution with 1.5oz 6R and .5oz 6C.
I mixed the toner and let it sit on my hair for 20 minutes before rinsing it out

Did I mention wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stained?

Pictures never do hair color justice because of all the different lighting and unless you are a hair photographer you just can’t get it the same so here are 3 different photos in different light that I took to show the final results.

See? Not so scary! I really don’t think these photos do it justice but I am more than confident in the outcome in order to attempt it a second time in the future!

Just to be clear though, I am not giving up on salons. The minute we have moved back to the states I will be on a mission to find a good salon I can settle down with.

What do you think? Any tips for the next time?
