Medieval Mischief

Growing up, every year we would go to the Renaissance festival where I would get my hair braided, have a gigantic turkey leg, maybe get a fun outfit, and just generally enjoy being immersed in such a fun environment. The Renaissance festival was something I always looked forward to going to when I was younger so as I got older I have always kept an eye out for them. The last one I was at was one Shai and I went to a couple years back in Las Vegas that was a bit of a disappointment.

Since being in Germany, there has probably been a Medieval Festival (what they call them) every weekend, so I was pretty excited when I finally got the chance to check one out. The Medieval Fest at Freisen Naturewildpark had 400 tents to house approximately 2,000 actors. They had a discount for visitors who dressed up (I did not) and there were hands down way more people in costume than any “faire” back in the states.

There were all sorts of your “typical” faire vendors – liquors, honey, medieval clothes and headdresses, etc. There was even a tarot reader.

They had cherry wine which was out of this world and I could have drank by the liter but I settled on just a small glass. I will be on the search for this wine from now on though!

There were no turkey legs that I saw but there was a never ending amount of potato dishes and stands as well as chicken and freshly smoked salmon!

There were some … interesting spots too, like the medieval torture tents as well as one where the lady covered people in clay. We saw multiple people in an old tin bath covered in mud….we didn’t quite understand what was going on.

All in all, it was really an enjoyable festival. They had tons of tents, archery, jousting, constant stage performers (although no comedian with the barrels of tomatoes to throw at), and more than enough food and drink. Considering that Europe is where the Renaissance actually was…I would say they know how to do a festival for it!

Oh, and I definitely got a tan line from this top AND necklace! haha oops!

Do you love these kinds of festivals too?
