I have been wearing heels every chance I get for as long as I can remember. I wore heels most days in high school and never looked back. Practical shoes were never the priority! While I have a career that keeps me in less than fashionably footwear, I have never let that stop me from dressing up with a nice pair of stilettos on the weekends. Living in Vegas, this was not a difficult thing to maintain. After almost wearing the soles off of my lace-up flats our first week living in Europe, I knew that a more substantial shoe was going to be essential.
As someone who loves dresses, I have tried wearing flats with dresses in the past but never really loved the look (or at least told myself I didn’t). The furthest I had branched out included wearing sandals with a summer maxi-dress or lace-up flats with a casual day dress. Moving overseas I decided that I needed to find some shoes that I could walk a half-marathon in while still wearing a range of dress styles (because I am not giving up wearing dresses just because Europe doesn’t like paved roads).
Turns out, wearing dresses with comfortable walking shoes is actually cuter than I remembered and way easier on my feet. I didn’t run out and buy tennis shoes by any means (although I have my eye on adidas superstars now that they are making a comeback) but went with metallic colors that make any style of shoe dressier and focusing on styles that felt modern and sleek.
How I tried this style
These silver oxfords are on the masculine side which makes them even more fun to pair with a girly dress. I love a little menswear inspiration and I ended up loving them with this dress!
3 months ago I could have never imagined wearing a dress like this black number from Zara with anything BUT heels but I am so glad I opened my mind to these other options. It makes me feel like a city girl!
My Oxfords are still available (On Sale!).
So what do you think? Have you been forced to adjust your style when you moved somewhere new? Are you as scared of flats and dresses as I was??
