A day in the city

Hallo!

Today was just a casual day in Munich to see a couple more sights and buy some souvenirs.
We started out with our first time eating a real breakfast. We went to our hotel breakfast buffet that had all sort of cheeses and meats and breads and then different types of muesli and some granola and dried fruit and some fresh fruit and watermelon as well. Tea and coffee and juice as well. All in all a good breakfast and one I could eat slot of. Nice.

Then we decided to go into the city and go to the Bavarian national museum. There was really no one there -no crazy line like the deutsches museum. We got the audio guide which was a great idea since every sign in the whole museum was in German. The was nit a guide for everything unfortunately but it was a solid museum. The entire bottom floor was just nativity scenes. Some 400 or so nativity scenes from the last like 700 years or so. Crazy. Got a little creepy too after a while cause it was in the basement and it wasn’t very bright and there was no one else down there…just us and the baby Jesus dolls….
So then we moved up through the museum. Lots of Jesus here too with church alters and statues and carvings and paintings… But all really old and well preserved and therefor interesting. We especially liked “death riding a lion” which was basically a carved skeleton on top of a lion and it worked as a clock and the skeleton would bang a hammer on a bell inside the lion every hour and it’s mouth would move and the lions tongue…it was crazy…and like 500 years old or something….really cool.

There was a whole room of wood furniture of the bolles style with tortoise in lay and ivory and all sorts of expensive things… People just don’t make furniture like that any more.

Then we went to the viktualienmarket. A huge farmers market near Marienplatz. We just had sausages and sauerkraut for lunch but then walked through the market and had the best grilled/ marinated eggplant ever. Olives too.

There was also an exotic fruit stand and dried fruit stand where we got dried kumquats which were really just naturally sweet and delicious. There was a juice bar across the little strip but I was too full for that. We did go to the Turkish delight vendor and got some pomegranate turkish delight. Did I mention all of the things we bought were in 100g sizes? Everything is by 100g in the market. Yet they always seem to be over 100g…never can get it quite right, is 140g ok?… Lol

Then we continued to walk around marienplatz and bought the rest of the souvenirs we needed. I bought myself a shirt that says I <3 Munchen ( the German way of saying Munich ) but that's about it for me.

They were setting a stage and vendors up in the center and so we thought we would go back and put our purchases away and then head back for dinner and to see what was going on. Well, nothing was going on, we think maybe it’s all for tomorrow but we aren’t sure. We just headed to a place for dinner, Augustiner am platz. I had the best meal of the trip, beef with spinach and potatoes. The spinach was blended and cooked and had the most incredible seasoning I have ever had on spinach. It was almost sweet…and the potatoes were kind of mashed but kind of chunky and altogether yummy and the beef was tender and not much fat. And the best part was no gluten so I’m still feeling good.
We were just sitting in the restaurant and I look over to the door and in walked Sammy and Katrina ! Two girls from school that were in Munich for two days as part of their 23day euro tour. Crazy ! 1.3million people in Munich and of all the bars and restaurants in all munich they walked into the same one as me at the same time! It was so crazy. It was really nice getting to talk to other people too, especially Americans . They are having an awesome time going to 11 countries in 23 days. I don’t think I could handle so much travel in such a short time but it sounded like they were having a blast, and they have really seen some cool things!

By the time we left it was raining outside again. Ugh. The whole day was gorgeous weather and then the night it rained. I guess all in all it’s not that bad. We got wet walking the 500m back to our hotel or so but it’s all good now. Safe in our warm little room.
Only two more days in Munich! I can’t believe how fast it has gone!
