5 things I learned my 2nd 5 days in Germany

We just keep learning things here! Here are 5 more things we have learned since moving to Germany. If you missed my first 5, you can see them here.

  1. Germans missed the memo about smoking and cancer
Seriously. Every person smokes here! They even have smoking areas in some restaurants!! Ash trays everywhere! We just can’t figure it out, its insane to see people smoking non stop!
  2. Recycling is a serious thing
Germans take eco-friendly to another level. We have 3 trash cans to sort everything out properly to avoid fines! In order to reduce trash, they actually use real plates, silverware, and glasses at festivals! When they give you your wine in a glass, they charge you a 2 euro deposit that you get when you bring the glass back. It is pretty interesting, and I have to say, I do enjoy drinking from a real glass.
  3. All of the women cut their hair
Shai noticed this first but it is looks true to me but we think 90% of the women over 30 years old have their hair cut short. Not a “lob,” but to your ears or above level of short. It’s not that hot here (compared to Vegas, Arizona, and Florida) so I don’t really understand the reason…but it is definitely a thing!
  4. Spiders. They. have. all. the. spiders.
I was able to make it 4 years in Vegas without seeing a single scorpion and my interaction with spiders was very minimal. I think that we have killed more spiders in a week here than I have seen in the last 4 years of my life combined. It is truly the stuff of nightmares. We are stocked up on raid like we are going to war with any insect that even thinks about coming near our house.
  5. Germans don’t seem to understand the width of a car
We have found ourselves on one too many roads that are two-way streets that would 100% be one-way, one-lane streets anywhere in America. In fact, some of the streets here that are one-way are the same width as the ones that are two way!! Add in enough bends to make you dizzy and you have some seriously awful drives. Considering most of these roads are lined with trees, you really have to ask who decided the width of some of these crazy ass roads!

It is quite the adventure out here but we are having fun with it!
